The end of the discount season

18 June 20266 min read

Cutting rates in October does not fill October. It teaches next year's guest to wait.

Every autumn the same instinct returns. Occupancy softens, the calendar thins, and the first lever anyone reaches for is price. It works — once. The rooms fill, the month closes respectably, and a quiet lesson is taught to the market: this property discounts in October.

The following year that lesson is repeated back to you. Bookings that would have arrived in July now wait until September. Lead time collapses. The discount that was meant to be exceptional becomes the expected price, and the rate you publish in high season begins to look like an opening bid.

The alternative is not stubbornness. It is giving the low season a different reason to exist. A gastronomy weekend, a residency, a rate that includes something the guest cannot buy separately — these fill rooms without renaming the property as cheap. The arithmetic is nearly identical in the first year. By the third, it is not close.
