Direct is not a channel. It is a relationship.

You cannot win direct bookings with a banner that says Best Rate Guaranteed.

Parity messaging is the weakest promise in hospitality. It tells a guest that booking with you is not worse — an argument that has never persuaded anyone of anything.

Direct wins when the direct experience is genuinely different: the room you cannot select on an OTA, the arrival time you can actually request, the person who answers the message within the hour. None of this is a technology problem, though technology is how it is delivered.

The properties that have moved past sixty percent direct did not out-discount the OTAs. They gave the guest a reason to come to the source, and then made the source the easiest place in the world to book.
